Transport Unions challenges stigma and discrimination at workplaces

ITF affiliates all over the world will be active during World AIDS day 2009 and implement different activities. Numbers of affiliates have already sent us their plan of action. We will request you to do the same otherwise send us a report of your activities with photographs after the event to education@itf.org.uk


Following are few of their planned activities:


Centro de Jefes y Oficiales Maquinistas Navales of Argentina will organise discussion sessions on HIV/AIDS and will show ITF documentary, “Highway of Hope” in different workplaces.

Maritime Union of Australia (MUA ) will organize rallies across the country. Their national officials will highlight the campaign at monthly union meetings.  The national youth conference of MUA, which will be held on December 1-3, 2009, will highlight the HIV campaign and will also pass a resolution on HIV/AIDS


Bangladesh Inland Navigation Workers Union will organize seminar to highlight the importance of dealing HIV/AIDS at workplaces.   

ITF affiliates in Barbados will organize a seminar for about 100 shop stewards.  Their focus will be on stigma and discrimination. The union expects that the participants will take information from that seminar and use it to advance the arguments for workplace policies when they enter into Collective Bargaining sessions with their employers. They will also be using national radio to speak to the nation.  Most of this work will be in collaboration with the Ministry of Labour's HIV/AIDS section.
 

In Belgium, Belgische Transportarbeidersbond (BTB) will put on campaign materials in their workplaces. They will also organize deiscussion sessions.
 
ITF affiliates in Botswana have a pool of trainers and they will organize education session for workers at workplaces. They are also planning to organize sessions to reach out to the unorganized workers, including the informal sector of the economy.


Asociacion Nacional de Servidores Publicos del Instituto Nacional de Vias Anseinvias, from Colombia will organize discussion session for workers and their families.

Ethiopian Transport and Communication Workers Trade Union Industrial Federation (TCWTUIF) will organize a seminar to disseminate survey finding on HIV/AIDS in transport sector. They will publish a special newsletter; will organize Video show and experience sharing sessions based on success stories. They will also mobilze trasport workers for VCT. They also organized education session for women network.  

Ghana General Transport Petroleum and Chemical Workers Union will organise a discussions session with employers, government agencies and other relevant stakeholders on the importance of working together in preventing HIV/AIDS infection and provide care and support.

Clerical and Commercial Workers Union in Guyana will organise special discussion sessions to promote voluntary counselling and testing (VCT). They will also distribute condoms at work place.


ITF affiliates in India including Adarsho Auto and Taxi Drivers Union, Forward Seamen Union of India; Southern Railway Mazdoor Union (AIRF) will organize discussion sessions for workers and family members.  

Kesatuan Pelaut Indonesia(KPI) will organise special seminars for outgoing seafarers. They will also put on ITF posters at workplaces. .

HIV positive support group of Kenya Dock Workers Union will organise discussion sessions for workers at workplaces. They also organized candle memorial for those who have died of AIDS. They will be organizing a big rally on sensitization. They will organize cultural programme with poems, role-play and drama related to the occasion.


Kenya Long Distance Truck Driver and Allied Workers Union will organize weeklong special education programme in the Wellness they are operating in partnership with the North Star Foundation.

Independent Transport Workers Association of Nepal will organize awareness sessions for truckers and people of the surrounding community in newly launched drop in Centre along India/Nepal border.

Peer educators of Nepal Yatayat Mazdoor Sangh will conduct education sessions thought out the country. They also put on posters and stickers at different workplaces.

AMOSUP, ITF affiliate in Philippines will organize HIV/AIDS education and awareness activities.

Secteur d'Activité Professionnelle Aviation Civile  and Syndicat Democratique des Techniciens du Sénégal will organize number of activities during African regional conference that will be held in Dakar from November, 21-27 2009.

In Sierra Leone, 5 ITF affiliated unions (Seafarers, Dockers,Fishers, Road Transport and Waterfront nions) will be holding  meetings and discussion Programmes at the seafarers Welfare centre targeting the leadership and general members of these unions. Officials from the National Aids secretariat will be contacted to give a lecture on the prevention, care and support programmess for Transport Workers.
 
South Africa Transport and Allied Workers Union(SATAWU) in collaboration with employers will organize programme to promote VCT and to enrol more members into ARV therapy.

National Union of Seafarers Sri Lanka will organize discussion sessions for maritime workers. They put on ITF posters at workplaces and distribute condoms.  

ITF affiliates in Togo will organize awareness campaign at workplaces. They will organize special VCT session

Ugandan Amalgamated Transport and General Workers Union (ATGWU) will organize number of programmes at different wellness centres that they run in partnership with Solidarity Centre and North Star Foundation.  

Zambia bus and taxi Workers Union will organize education programme at workplaces.
