New ITF office in Italy to crack down on substandard shipping
17 October 2008
A brand new ITF office opened last week to tackle poor working conditions on board flag of convenience vessels across three Italian ports.
The office, which opened on 8 October in Trieste, will target the local port as well as those of Monfalcone and Porto Nogaro. Inspections of contracts and social and living conditions on board flag of convenience vessels entering the ports will be carried out by ITF inspector Paolo Siligato, who is based in the new office.
Fabrizio Barcellona, ITF Maritime Operations Unit, commented: “Seafarers on board some flag of convenience vessels work outside any social context and are underpaid, subjected to a poor working environment and can even be badly clothed and fed. This new office will hopefully help to turn this situation around.”
