Contract win for workers at aircraft manufacturer in the US

6 November 2008

Workers at a US based aerospace and aircraft manufacturer have won a four-year contract, ending 57 days of strike action.

The workers, represented by the ITF-affiliated International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM), announced this week that members had voted to ratify a four-year deal with the Boeing Company by a majority of 74 per cent. The agreement covers 27,000 members at the company’s facilities in Washington, Oregon, Kansas and California. Strike action over the contract, which began on 6 September, has now been called off. Workers rejected the company’s initial offer on 3 September.

"This contract gives the workers at Boeing an opportunity to share in the extraordinary success this company has achieved over the past several years," said IAM Aerospace Coordinator Mark Blondin. "It also recognises the need to act with foresight to protect the next generation of aerospace jobs. These members helped make Boeing the company it is today, and they have every right to be a part of its future."

As well as achieving the many job security gains outlined in the contract, the union reasserted its jurisdiction over the scope of jobs represented by the bargaining unit and won many monetary gains. Other benefits include a freeze on workers’ share of payments towards medical costs at 2002 rates until 2012 and promotion rights.
