Young seafarers’ focus group kicks off Monday
3 April 2009
The ITF and INTERTANKO will host a focus group next week designed to explore the needs and concerns of young seafarers. Running from 6 to 8 April, and being held at the organisations’ HQs, the initiative is designed to help them better understand and respond to the concerns and motivations affecting young people who have entered or are about to enter seafaring as a career.
Jointly organised by INTERTANKO and the ITF the three day event will provide a forum for an international group of 21 young seafarers to discuss topical issues, engage with maritime decision makers and advise them on their priorities. The culmination of the event will be a meeting between the young seafarers and IMO Secretary General Efthimios Mitropoulos.
Captain Howard Snaith, INTERTANKO Marine Director, commented: “The recruitment and retention of qualified seafarers is a matter of ongoing concern for both industry organisations and unions, and one that we believe we need to act on. This forum is one part of that effort and sees us working together to listen, learn and respond to the people who are our industry’s future.”
ITF Seafarers’ Section Secretary Jon Whitlow said: “This forum is designed to elicit the views of a representative group of young seafarers on the state of a maritime career today. We hope it will provide some real insights that will help us to identify and focus on the most pressing challenges regarding attraction and retention in the shipping industry today. It also dovetails with the IMO’s Go to Sea! campaign, which both our organisations are supporting.”
