Nordic week of action update – 22 September 2009

22 September 2009

The Nordic week of action, which began yesterday, is set to continue full steam ahead for the rest of this week. On the first day of inspections, the joint forces of ITF inspectors/unions and union activists visited some 54 vessels.

Some discrepancies have already been discovered between the contractual terms and conditions the seafarers signed at the point when they joined their ships and the actual conditions they have been subject to while on board.

In at least two cases, vessels were reported to the Port State Control Officers after deficiencies were spotted during the ship visits.

Negotiations are ongoing with ship owners and ship managers to rectify issues related to wages and overtime payments, as well as to ensure that the seafarers obtain improved conditions in line with their contractual entitlements.
